I inherited one of these about 35 years ago. I never knew what is was because the only marking on it is: W.V. Steiger Thun and 30249 (serial number?). Is there any way to tell when it was manufactured and the caliber?

Eric always looks like he's surrounded by a bunch of danger. He's just like me - the firearm has been checked at least 3 times and it's definitely unloaded, but even then it still has to be treated as if it's loaded. There are four things you can never have enough of in the gun world: firearms, accessories, ammunition & safety.

Just a heads up, you have a typo in your title. Vetterli should have two T's and one L.

I love firearm history just as much as I love my modern firearms. Keep making these history videos. Great to watch as I polish a bolt and install a new trigger kit on a build.

Would you consider it safe to shoot low pressure "gallery loads" in the 6.5 conversion? Seems like a good way to get all the old school feels without the difficult to source components.

Ive got a sleeved veterlli that came from my grandparents home. It was part of a standing floor lamp that stayed in the corner of their living room for 40 years. Ive thought about tracking down some ammo and shooting it, but every source of online info specifically warns against it.

I have a italian (my country) Vetterli. But in 16 gauge :-) herited from my grandpa. after ww1 a lot of Vetterli were converted to smooth bore, economics single shot guns for poor rural peoples. and after 2ww also a lot of carcano or k98 were converted in 36 gauge or 32 gauge for the sare reason

Great vid. I love the m95. Only bought 2, many years ago, and wish I had bought 10. Awesome little bush-woods carbine for deer hunting.

Excellent reminder of just how hectic the 1860-1890 arms race was! Metallic cartridge, center fire, small bore, repeating magazines, and smokeless all go from unheard of to mainstream in less than 30 years.
