If the M39 is the Cadillac of Mosin rifles, what would the M28/76 be? How about the Vz.54?

I miss surplus 5.45 and 7.62x25mm!

45-70 is still used by the US Navy and US Coast Guard for line throwing between ships. It is still in inventory. Not a battlefield usage. Military nonetheless

What about the 7.62x54r exploding ammo?

Sure do a breakdown video like this with the 7.62x39.

Honestly the Mosin-Nagant is an awesome weapon. There are literally dozens of options for chassis replacements, detachable magazines, scope mounts and scopes built just for it. This gun will crack your level 3 armor like concrete under a jackhammer... may take the AK to make most of the headway in combat... but that Mosin-Nagant when necessary will still be taking enemy combatants off the field and cracking open body armor like eggs. The Dragunov PSL is an awesome weapon also... but that closed bolt sniper action is gonna hit harder no doubt.

What do you recommend for a 7.62 x 54 R hunting round
Comment on: Friday, May 8th, 2020 by M16A1E2
Just one little mistake. Long Mosin rifle that had shown - not a dragoon. It is infantry model, also after 1905 modernisation (very early infantry M1891 had no upper wood stock palte).

So, in Iraq, the bad guys armed with $ 50 Moisin-Nagants were out ranging the M-4 by several hundred yards. Did the military re-issue M-14s, or use captured Moisins ? Of course not. They started the extensive, expensive quest for a follow-on successor to the M-4, which is gonna cost $$$.

Off topic for the video but have you or would you do a 30 30 test on level 3 body armor? Love your videos thanks for all you do. From one Vet to another Thank you for your service.

I was gonna say either 30-06 or 45-70. But hey, I'm an American.

The main reason why this cartridge is still being use is because so much was made. Give it another 4 to 5 decades and the vast amounts of surplus of 7.6254R will dry up. This cartridge really is obsolete. The 50 BMG , 9mm Luger, and 223 Remington/ 5.56 45mm NATO will out last it.
Comment on: Wednesday, April 29th, 2020 by GARRISON NICHOLS
I have always wondered if it's a good idea to go with the most popular and widespread ammunition choices or would it be better to go with the more effective and less popular. Like with ammunition shortages the more widespread cartridges might get used up quickly compared to the less widespread ones. The 7.6254R and 9mm might not stay on the shelf as long as something like 8mm Mauser or 44 Special.

About corrosive primers: Corrosive primers are not themselves corrosive. They explode into residue, which when it contacts water in the air, makes a salt, and that's what does the rusting. Corrosive primers are used because they have two enormous advantages: They keep far better than non corrosive primers. They are more stable and last longer. They also can handle a range of temperatures better than non corrosive primers. This matters if much of your country is above the Arctic Circle. It's why Canada still issues its Mounty rangers with SMLE's using corrosive ammo. All it takes to wash out the salts is just a quick bit of a water. If you're anxious, get it with a wet patch. Run a dampened piece of paper towel down and that's enough. There is no need for bore solvents. I have never found any evidence that modern civilian production ammo for x25, x39, x54R is corrosive. I've used it for years. I've used Wolf, the Bears, Tula, Partizan, and more. I've on purpose left the guns uncleaned for weeks to months to prove the point. The primers are allocated by production line and are produced paralle line house. Military primers do not end up in civilian ammunition, and civilian primers do not end up in military ammunition.

30-06 has identical base dimensions to 7.92x57mm(8mm Mauser), it's just a bit longer and necked down to 30cal. So if one is copying good cartridge, so why not the good rifle?

You can continually improve what you're doing, always having the latest greatest but you end up having a lot of variations and confusion. Or you can go with what works and just keep going.

The only problem i have with this cartridge is rimlock, but it is also the same problem i have with 303 brit. Still love both as a plinking/ hunting round.
Comment on: Sunday, April 26th, 2020 by ANDY HASDIFFERENTOPINIONS
I've always thought 7.62x54r ammunition occurred naturally and could be commonly found in nature.
Comment on: Saturday, April 25th, 2020 by WARWICK RIGBY
Under these parameters, I think 303 British, just flashes outside the off stump and runs for the boundary to be swept up by deep fine leg before the boundary. Anecdotally, three Afghans with aging Lee-Enfields held down a US Marine Section for some time. Does that mean the 303 British is still in active service ? God Save the Queen.

Hey Eric, I was wondering if you k ew of anywhere online that I could order a bent bolt for a mosin nagant without using my own bolt body, i had found a great place but upon emailing the owner he no longer can buy bolt bodies so i would have to use my own bolt body which I'm not sure how i feel about. I was wondering if your or anyone knew a place to get a bent bolt without using my own.

Dah? (Russian for Homer's, "Doh.") Who would have guessed? The beveled head/rim of the 54R cartridge reminds me of the 8mm Kropatschek round most commonly found in the Portuguese M1886 bolt-action rifle. The Kropatschek round predates this rifle by a few years though it is (originally) a black powder cartridge. There are below quite a few Mosin rifle fans, I am not one. Antiquated and I would describe a Mosin M91 as the opposite of "smooth." I owned over a dozen during my career, including the better Finnish models, they all had terrible trigger pulls. The best shooter that I owned was a 1917 dated ex-Finn long Model 1891. Even with its crude original sights it was surprisingly accurate at 200 yards. Antiquated? Yes, but then most every gun I've owned was an old historical arm. The firearm and its historical context overshadows my interest in the other shooting sports. Ivan ultimately defeated Hitler's best and you cannot argue with that outcome.

What about the steel cased cartridges? Most ammo imports from the former Soviet bloc are steel, thus not relodable . Steel cases, corosive priming, varnished cases, make for dirty guns.

I always laugh when Fudd's say, "we haven't been invaded because of a gun behind every blade of grass". We haven't been invaded as far as our country proper because of the logistical nightmare of traversing the Atlantic and Pacific, and having allies/weak countries to the North and South.
